3.The official flag of Maryland is the only US state flag based on English heraldry.
As one of the most distinctive state flags in the union, the black and gold, red and white quartered flag is also one of only four state flags that does not contain the color blue.
4.The first school in the United States was Kings Williams School, opened in 1696 in Maryland.
It was chartered as a college in 1784, making it one of the oldest colleges in the country. Today, it is a private liberal arts school, St. John’s College.
5.Maryland is one of two states, along with Delaware, which gave up some of its land to help form the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C in 1790.
6.Maryland is the national leader in the production of blue crabs and soft clams.
